The Power of In-Play Betting
Posted by Rob Shepherd on Thursday, July 13, 2017
What type of bettor are you? Do you bet and forget or do you watch your bets like a hawk? Do you use in-play and have you ever partially cashed out? I share some hints and tips and also take a trip around the best betting sites to see what bonuses and promotions have caught my eye. I’ll tell you about a couple of offers ahead of a full round-up in time for the new footy season.
I have had much more success with betting, when betting in-play, than I ever have than when I bet pre-event. It doesn’t matter which sport I bet, I tend to do better. There are quite a few reasons for this and in this article, I will explain why.
Take Your Time to Observe
I am an absolute sucker for multi-goal scorer bets. For 5 weeks running I backed Harry Kane to score two or more goals and three or more goals. I stopped and what happened? He scored three goals in his next two games. It’s that fear of missing out that drives regular punters mad.
I found a switch in tactics suited my betting style better. I was aware that the first goal in Premier League games is on average not scored till over 20 minutes. So, I would give myself some time to see how the players started. Watching the movement of the strikers, do the defenders look comfortable? Do they look fired up? The same way horse racing enthusiasts can tell a lot by how a horse looks and acts, the same is true in other sports.
My latest victory in-play was during the Andy Murray v Sam Querrey match at Wimbledon. I watched footage of Andy walking to the court and it was obvious to me that he was carrying an injury, I also believed due to it being his “home” tournament that he would give it his all but ultimately, he would struggle.
Rather than bet straightaway I waited until Murray was a set up and placed two bets, one that Sam Querrey would win at 6/1 and another that Querrey would win the match 3-2. Both of these bets came in, that was totally down to reading the action in real-time.
Play the Stock Market, To Cash-Out or Not to Cash-Out
The exciting thing about in-play is that the amount you are offered to walk-away or “cash-out” your bet is constantly changing. You can use this to your advantage. For example, one trick I used a lot last year was to identify teams that were likely to score but unlikely to win.
I would edge my bets that the underdog would take an unlikely lead and score first, ideally the later in the match is better as it affects the cash-out value more. Let me show this in a scenario.
West Brom are playing Chelsea at home, I have no doubt that Chelsea will win but I suspect a goal from West Brom. Let’s imagine the odds on West Brom are 6/1 and I have £10 on a West Brom win. The chances are, the cash-out on offer will be less than £10 while the game remains at 0-0. In the 30th minute, West Brom score. At this point the cash out offer has increased to about £24. I would be tempted to take this and run.
Edit Your Bet – Switch Sides
Another feature at many online betting sites is the ability to edit your bets. The way it works is that you can add or remove sections, the current cash-out value is used.
Let’s take the previous example, I had a bet on West Brom to win at 6/1. They took the lead, instead of cashing out that bet, I would be highly tempted to edit my bet and create a new bet on Chelsea to go on and win the game.
There are two reasons for this, the £24 stake I now have to bet is better than my original stake of £10. The odds on Chelsea to win this match are higher than they are ever likely to go (unless West Brom score again), so this is a double win for me. This has been a profitable tactic on occasions but as with all betting, there are no guarantees. I hope it has given you food for thought though.
